School of Social Works

The School of Social Work (SSW) runs certificate and Ordinary Diploma courses in social work which NACTVET regulates. It also runs a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) Programme under the regulation of the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU). In the academic year 2025/2026, SSW is expected to resume the Master of Social Work program.

Diploma in Social Work

Entry requirements

NTA Level 4: Certificate of Secondary Education with minimum of FOUR PASSES excluding religious subjects or National Vocational Award (NVA) level 3 (with at least 3 passes of Certificate of secondary education (CSE).

NTA Level 5: Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education with at least one principal and subsidiary pass excluding religious subjects

or Basic Technician Certificate in Social Work (NTA level 4) or related occupations.

Duration of the programmes:

NTA level 4: 3 years
NTA level 5: 2 years

Bachelor of Social Work

Admission to Bachelor of Social Work

KU selects students to join the Social Work degree programme based on the TCU calendar. Students wishing to study Social Work program should apply through the university system which is https://osim.ku.ac.tz. The students will be selected based on their A’ level results or equivalent, followed by an assessment of their application form, personal and professional behaviour, academic performance, and communication skills. Successful candidates will immediately be enrolled in the bachelor’s degree programme and informed accordingly.

Entry requirements

To be selected for the Social Work Degree programme an applicant must have completed form six or its equivalent with two principal passes in the following subjects: History, Geography, Kiswahili, English Language, French, Arabic, Fine Arts, Economics, Commerce, Accountancy, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Advanced Mathematics, Agriculture, Computer Science or Nutrition with a minimum of 4 points or must have a Diploma in Social Work, Sociology, Education, Development Studies, Community Development, Counselling and Psychology, Youth Development Work, Nursing, Medical Laboratory Technology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Clinical Medicine, Secretarial Studies, Information and Communication Technology, Rural Development Planning, Business Administration, Marketing and Public Relations, Human Resource Management, Law, Records, Achieves and Information Studies, International Relations, Library Information Studies, Road and Railway Logistics Operations, Marine Engineering, Tourism and Tour Guide, Wildlife Tourism, Architecture, Labour Relations, Economic Diplomacy, Correction Sciences or Gender and Development with an average of “B’’ or a minimum GPA of 3.0.

The BSW programme is a three-year course. The course has a strong focus on the heath fields and the community through guided community (field) exposures of the students. It is flexible to meet the needs of students and respond to changing health care, political, socio-cultural, and technological needs of the country.

Students studying the Social Work degree are expected to:

have over 90% attendance during their fieldwork and class lectures.
pass the Continuous Assessment Test (CAT) to be allowed to sit for the Final Qualifying

Examination.

Score at least 50% and above in the Final Examination to pass the course.

Internship

BSW students are expected to attend concurrent fieldwork during the second year of their studies. Block field work is done for two months during the 3rd year of their programme.

Medical Social Work

The Department of Medical Social Work is designed to address all issues of physical health, psychiatry, and mental health as the three prime units.

All issues of health in its broad definition comprehensively including, physical and psychological well-being, psychiatric and mental health, are important for social work. Also understanding disease diagnosis, treatment, and care, as well as disease control and prevention, especially, control of disease outbreaks and worldwide pandemics is what informs social work knowledge and skill.

Policy, Administration and Research

The Department of Policy, administration and research is designated to address all issues pertaining to macro or indirect social work practice. All relevant theories on knowledge to inform skills relating to indirect interventions on client services are explored and applied to simulated sessions during coursework as well as during field practice. The department has a particular interest in addressing all matters related to policy, administration and research in the school environment as well as the community.

Partnership & Collaborations

Through KU the SSW maintains established links and collaboration with foreign Universities such as the University of KwaZulu Natal (UKZN), Western Kentucky University (WKU), and of lately, Howard University.

Through such partnerships, in June - July this year, KU received 16 students and 2 Faculty members from the WKU whereby 4 students were from the field of social work and the rest were from nursing and pre-med. In 2024/2025 academic year, it is also expected that 4 students from WKU will join SSW for one semester as students exchange programme.
