School of Nursing

The School of Nursing offers one academic programme which is Bachelor of Science in Nursing, a 4-year programme. The school provides high-quality education and training to future nursing professionals. Established to address the growing need for skilled healthcare providers, the school was designed to prepare students for diverse roles within the healthcare system.

Studying nursing at KU will provide graduates with necessary skills and competencies in managing emerging and re-emerging diseases in line with national and international guidelines.
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN)

Direct entry requirements

As governed by TCU regulations, Direct entry applicants must have completed from VI   or its equivalent with three principal passes in Chemistry, Biology and either Physics or Advanced Mathematics or Nutrition with a minimum of 6 points: A minimum of C grade in Chemistry and D grade in Biology and at least E grade in Physics or Advanced Mathematics or Nutrition.

 Equivalent entry requirements

Diploma in Nursing with an average of “B’’ or a minimum GPA of 3.0; in addition, an applicant must have a minimum of “D” grade in the following subjects: Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics and English at O-Level.

Duration of the programme: Four (4) years (plus one year of internship)

  • Undergraduate degree programme

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) program at Kairuki University is a comprehensive four-year degree. The program is divided into two main parts: Basic Sciences and Clinical Courses.

Basic Sciences (First Year to Second Year)

During the first two years, students focus on Basic Sciences, which lay the foundational knowledge required for nursing. Courses in this phase typically include:

  • Anatomy
  • Physiology
  • Biochemistry
  • Microbiology

These subjects provide a thorough understanding of the human body, its functions, and the various factors that influence health and disease.

Clinical Courses (Third Year to Fourth Year)

In the final two years, the focus shifts to Clinical Courses, where students apply their theoretical knowledge in practical settings. Courses in this phase often cover:

  • Medical-Surgical Nursing
  • Pediatric Nursing
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology Nursing
  • Community Health Nursing
  • Mental Health Nursing

This part of the program includes hands-on training in hospitals, clinics, and community health settings, allowing students to gain real-world experience under the supervision of experienced professionals.

Research and Field Work

Throughout the program, students also engage in research and field work. This involves conducting scientific research projects, often addressing current health issues, and participating in community health initiatives. These activities are crucial for developing critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Overall, the BScN program at Kairuki University aims to produce competent, compassionate, and ethical nursing professionals ready to meet the healthcare needs of diverse populations.
  • Assessment and academic progression regulations
The assessment and academic progression regulations for the BScN program are designed to maintain high academic standards and ensure that students are well-prepared for their professional roles. The key aspects of these regulations include:
  1. Continuous Assessments:
  • Continuous assessments will be conducted throughout the semester and will contribute to the final grade. These assessments may include quizzes, assignments, practical evaluations, and participation in class discussions.
  1. Final Examinations:
  • Final examinations will be held at the end of each semester. These exams will test the comprehensive understanding of the course content covered during the semester.
  1. Grading System:
  • The grading system follows a percentage scale, with a minimum passing mark set at 50%. Grades will be awarded based on the cumulative performance in both continuous assessments and final examinations.
  1. Academic Progression:
  • Students must pass all required courses in a given year to progress to the next academic year. Failure to pass a course may result in repeating the course or taking supplementary exams as per the university’s guidelines.
  1. Remedial Measures:
  • Students who do not meet the required standards in assessments may be provided with remedial measures, including re-registering for the failed course, to help them meet the academic requirements.

  • Internship
Upon graduation from the BScN program at Kairuki University, nurses are required to complete an internship before being registered by the Tanzania Nursing and Midwifery Council (TNMC) as independent practitioners. The internship is a crucial phase that provides hands-on experience and further hones the skills acquired during the academic program.
Medical and Surgical Nursing
The Department of Medical and Surgical Nursing is designed to:
  • Train in Patient Care: Equip students with skills for providing comprehensive care to patients with medical and surgical conditions.
  • Enhance Clinical Competence: Develop students’ ability to perform clinical procedures and manage complex health issues.
  • Promote Evidence-Based Practice: Teach the application of evidence-based practices in medical and surgical nursing.
  • Foster Critical Thinking: Cultivate critical thinking and decision-making skills for effective patient care.
  • Provide Hands-On Experience: Offer practical training in hospitals and clinical settings under expert supervision.
